Mari-Tech 2012, Canada's marine technical conference and exhibition, opened with a bang on April 10th in Ottawa. The annual event to showcase technology and business developments was the largest ever, with over 500 delegates and dozens of paper presentations. Being held Ottawa's Hampton Inn & Conference Centre, it was the largest in the 33 year history of the event.

The event was co-hosted by the Canadian Institute of Marine Engineering and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers Eastern Canadian Section. The two organizations teamed this year to ensure the widest range of interest in the conference. Interviewed on April 10th, Jeffrey Smith, the CIMarE National Council Chair and Mari-Tech 2012 Co-Chair remarked, "We have a unique, highly regarded mix of people from government, industry, professional services and academic at the conference. It's a real opportunity to get up to speed on technical advances and exchange ideas."

Mari-Tech 2012 included an exhibition hall with more than 50 industry suppliers and firms, simultaneous lecture theatres, and several round-table panel sessions during the two full days of the event, April 10-11, 2012. Conference themes included marine safety, business systems improvements, and regulatory changes, with keynote speakers from the Canadian Coast Guard, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the government of Canada. The sponsors at the event included global leaders such as Babcock Canada, Irving Shipbuiding, Lloyd's Register, IFS North America, Canadian Caterpillar Dealers and L-3 Communication MAPPS.
